Teasing You with My Cousin Tonys Sausage

When my visiting cousin Tony told me he was making homemade sausage for us, I asked him if I could film it, as I knew some of you would enjoy seeing that process. So, it really is too bad that I sucked as cameraman.

I was running in and out of the kitchen, trying to work on other things - I was hitting record too late, or stop record too soon - so, I just missed too many shots to have the recipe make sense.

Undaunted, I decided to edit what I had, to tease you until I film one myself. As I say in the clip, making sausage at home is really not that hard, and I may even do a version that doesnt need a Kitchen Aid grinder. Stay tuned!

How to Measure a Cup of Flour and Why You Shouldnt

One of the oldest cooking clichés in the book is how much chefs hate to measure things. For the most part this is true. When it comes to savory preparations (think soup), exact measurements are not crucial, as the final seasoning/texture is adjusted at the end of procedure anyway.

The closest Ive ever come to throwing the remote through the TV screen was the time I saw a well-know Food Network cooking personality (she has dark hair) measure a tablespoon of chopped parsley to sprinkle over the top of some casserole. Really? Come on!

However, when it comes to baking, exact measurements are critical. A perfectly moist cookie recipe made with 2 cups of flour for one cook can be a dry, disappointing experience for another. Why?

As youll see in this short, but hopefully illuminating video, the amount of flour that will fit in a cup can vary greatly. If at all possible, when baking, use recipes that call for flour by weight and use a small digital scale to portion.

This is not a sponsored post, but I will disclose that the EatSmart scale you see in the clip was sent to me to test out. Ive only used it a few times, so I cant comment on its lifespan or durability, but so far, so good, and I
really love the simple design. Heres a link to the Amazon page where its sold, and received many excellent reviews.

Almanac Beer – Wont Help You Forecast the Weather But Will Help You Not Care

Id like to congratulate my friend, and resident Food Wishes beer consultant, Jesse Friedman, who has recently taken the plunge into the wild and wacky world of self-employment. You may know Jesse as the publisher of Beer & Nosh, but very soon, youll also know him as the wildly successful co-creator of Almanac Beer. By the way, if youre going to quit your day job, and say goodbye to all the safety and security it affords, then having lots of craft beer around is probably not a bad idea.

After years of hard work and experimentation, Jesse and his partner Damian will be officially releasing their "farm to barrel" brew on Thursday, June 30. I had the pleasure of tasting some this spring, and was quite impressed. Ive just returned from LA after three grueling weeks, and way too tired to come up with the appropriate adjectives to describe the beer, so instead Ill simply invite you to watch the video below, and then give the Almanac Beer blog a visit for more information.

FYI: Im back in the kitchen tomorrow and should have a long overdue video recipe up by the end of the day. Stay tuned!

Can I do you now Sir

Can I do you now, Sir?
Tommy Handley in ITMA with Mrs Mopp, the office char, played by Dorothy Summers.

Its really quite surprising just where my blogging journey takes me and what I find out along the way.  As an OXO Good Grips Blogger, I was offered this nifty extendable duster to review and the first thing that popped into my mind was Mrs Mopp.  I had no real idea who or what Mrs Mopp was, just some sort of folk memory of the phrase and it being something to do with cleaning.  My search took me imediately to the radio show ITMA (Its That Man Again) which starred comedian Tommy Handley and featured many well known comedy actors of that era including Hattie Jacques and Molly Weir and Maurice Denham.  How incredible then, that a character from a pre-war radio show should endure until today!  I guess it would have been a programme listened to by my parents when they were children and the strength of the connection between the name of the character Mrs Mopp and her job as a cleaner has helped it to stick in peoples minds, as well as the catch phrase "Can I do you now, Sir".

I cant claim to be the worlds greatest housewife, Anthea Turner and Mrs Mopp have nothing to worry about from me! As I live in an old house with lots of nooks and crannies, dusting can be a bit of a nightmare.  I loved the way you could get in between the newel posts with the long slim head of the duster.

The long handle makes it easy to reach those out of the way places.

My favourite thing about this duster is the way you can angle the head to dust round the corner!  There is a button on the side to adjust the position of the head so it stays in the place.

The ladies got a little tickle too!

Yes, that is a lot of dust and I am a slovenly housewife, but the tops of my doors are quite clean now.

The duster is attached to the handle with a pop fastener, so you can take it off and wash it, which I did.  No colour came out of the duster so its quite safe to wash it with other coloured items.  Ive only washed it once and a few bits of orange fluff came off it, but not a huge amount and easily removable.

I also tested the OXO Good Grips Dust Pan & Brush Set  the rubber lip on the dust pan means you get really close to the floor and dont end up with a line of crumbs underneath.  Not a lot you can say about a dust pan and brush - it works and the brush clips neatly into pan for storage.

RRP for the extendable duster is £15.00 and £9.00 for the Dustpan and Brush.

I was supplied with these products by OXO Good Grips UK for review, I was not paid for this post and all opinions are my own.
